Learn About Quartzite!

Believe it or not, quartzite is even harder than granite! According to Mohs hardness scale, it is even more durable than steel. Meaning, if you wanted to go ahead and forget a cutting board your countertop should come out unharmed. Quartzite is formed from sandstone and quartz. If you love the look of marble, but want something more durable, quartzite might be for you! Since it is natural stone, no two slabs are ever the same. You’ll be guaranteed to have something unique! While it is incredibly durable, still be sure to reseal your quartzite yearly (at least) so that you do not stain your beautiful addition.

Quartz versus Stone

Quartz versus Stone – What are the differences?

Quartz – Temperamental Beauty

While they have a similar aesthetic, they do have their specific advantages and disadvantages. We’ll go over some of those. Quartz is an ideal option if you are looking for less upkeep, versus natural stone which needs to be sealed. Family and life wear is no problem for quartz. Being an engineered stone it does not require sealing. However, it is not quite as heat resistant as natural stone. There are multiple conflicting reports when it comes to the matter of just how high temperature quartz countertops are capable of withstanding. While lower end estimates seem to be about 150 degrees Fahrenheit, more moderate estimates are around 300 degrees Fahrenheit.

Natural Stone – Enduring Elegance

All natural stone, such as granite, quartzite, marble, etc., are porous to some extent. They are filled with tiny holes that liquids seep into causing darkening and/or discoloration. Natural stone is sealed so it fills any pores in the stone, making it difficult for liquids to be absorbed. Additionally, natural stone is much more resistant to heat if not fully resistant. Don’t worry about placing a hot pot directly on your natural stone countertop, depending on the particular stone.

What do you think would work best for your lifestyle?

Sealing Stone Countertops

How do you reseal your countertops? We’re here for a refresher. Any natural stone we install is sealed upon installation, however we recommend resealing once or twice a year to make sure it stays looking like new. Now, how do you go about sealing it? That is an easy process. First, clear off the countertops. Avoid any potentially damaging substances such as bleach or harsh commercial cleansers. We recommend Stonetech bulletproof sealer, easily available on Amazon. We recommend that if your sealer does not come packaged in a spray bottle to transfer it to one. From there, spray down the countertops and let it sit for at least 15 minutes. After the 15 minutes are up, wipe down any excess residue that was leftover.

Don’t trust it? Test that your sealer is working.  The following day, in a corner or somewhere not too seen, pour a bit of water on the surface. If the water pools or bubbles on the surface, the countertops are sealed. If the water seeps in and begins darkening the stone, they are not fully sealed.
