Concerns with Radon

What is Radon?

Radon is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas that is produced by the natural decay of uranium in rocks and soil. It is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, after smoking. It can seep into homes through cracks in the foundation, basement walls, and floors. Radon can also be released from building materials, such as granite, brick, concrete, wood, and drywall.

How Does Granite Emit Radon?

Granite can contain trace amounts of uranium, thorium, and radium. These radioactive elements decay into radon gas over time. The amount of gas released from granite depends on the type of granite, the amount of radioactive elements it contains, and the surface area of the granite.

Is Radon from Granite a Health Risk?

The risk of exposure from granite countertops is generally low. If you have granite countertops and your home has high levels of radon, you could be at an increased risk of lung cancer. The EPA recommends that you test your home if you live in an area with high levels. The truth of the matter is that the granites most often used in the home as countertops, floors, and accent walls, are safe, and do not pose health risks. If you have any questions about the safety of using granite in your home or business, the links below have the unbiased information necessary to make an educated decision.
